1 medium onion, chopped
Grease 1-1/2 quart casserole, set aside (I use spray).
For the sauce, in medium saucepan cook onion, garlic, basil in margarine and olive oil until tender, but not brown. Stir in flour, pepper and salt. Add milk, stir and cook until bubbly and thickened.
Place half of sliced potatoes into casserole and cover with half the sauce. Repeat (I mixed through to make sure all the potatoes were covered).
Bake covered at 350°F/175°C for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake another 30 minutes or more until potatoes are tender.
I add grated cheese to the sauce for dairy. The fresh basil gives it a nice twist. Good for Shavuot.

Nutritional Info Per Serving: N/A
2 cloves garlic, chopped (we like more)
2 tbsp. minced fresh basil
1 tbsp. margarine or butter
1 tbsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. pepper (I prefer fresh ground, multi coloured - black, green, pink)
Salt to taste
1-1/4 cups milk or soy milk for pareve
3-4 medium potatoes scrubbed but not (necessarily) peeled, thinly sliced (I used about 10 to 12 and adjusted the amount of onions, garlic, basil and sauce accordingly)
I have made this pareve or dairy. Both are good!
