1 tablespoon olive oil
Heat frying pan on medium heat and put in olive oil and butter/margarine.
Add brown sugar. Stir until the sugar has been dissolved.
Lower the heat under the pan. Add the thinly sliced onions to the pan. Stir occasionally.
When all of the onions are darkly caramelized, remove the pan from the heat.
The caramelized onions can be used immediately or stored in a covered container for a few days.
