3 tbsp. margarine, or butter, or veggie schmaltz (I used the schmaltz, click here for recipe)
In a saucepan heat the fat. Add the next 7 ingredients, and sauté for few minutes. Add all the other ingredients, but the water, mix well, and sauté again just for few minutes. Now add the water.
Bring to a boil, and continue to cook on the smallest fire for 1 hour.
Serve hot. You can add 1 tbsp. sour cream on top of the soup (optional, with dairy ingredients) and fresh black bread.

1 small cabbage, cut in slices, not too thin
1 cup sauerkraut, rinsed
2 medium onions, cut thin strips
2 leeks, sliced, not too thin
3 garlic cloves, cut in small pieces
3 medium carrots, shredded grossly
1 cup crushed tomato from a can
2 tbsp. tomato paste
3 tbsp. pareve chicken soup powder
1 tsp. paprika
Few drops of Tabasco
1 tsp. "liquid smoke," optional (I did use it)
1 tsp. soy sauce
Salt and freshly ground pepper
8 cups water
