1-1/2 cups sugar
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9"x13" baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix the sugar, margarine, applesauce, and vanilla.
Combine the dry ingredients with a whisk to thoroughly combine, then add to the wet ingredients. Mix thoroughly and add 1 cup chocolate chips (or more if you want, up to 1-1/2 cups).
Pour into baking pan and sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool completely, cut carefully into squares (brownies are very moist). Let sit out a bit before storing. Make sure to put wax paper in between layers when storing, so brownies will not stick.
