My bubby used to spread the grated radish on rye bread or black bread, the latter being preferable, and use shmaltz instead of oil. Heartburn heaven! My mother said it was her favorite sandwich!
My Zaide who died when I was 12 (I'm now 55), taught me to love "raytich" on pumpernickel. He also taught me how to knock down a shot of whiskey. I think appreciation of both are acquired skills, once learned never forgotten!
Thanks for the memories.
P.S. I now use oil rather than schmaltz, but don't forget lots of pepper.
