Yes, they are the lungs and edible. They are also a wonderful family story.
My mother and her female relatives always cleaned them out. When one of my cousins went to camp, he saw that the chickens there all had "thingees" so he was convinced it was a weird breed of bird!
After they explained it was a perfectly okay kosher bird, he answered "it's not lungs. Its 'camp food'."
For 70 years, we have referred to anything left in the bird as "camp food."
